A Pap smear is a standard test that checks for indications of cervical cancer. By screening the cervix for cancerous and precancerous cells, the test is able to accurately identify early stages of cancer. The term “Pap smear” comes from the doctor who first showed that this test was reliable, Dr. Georgios Papanikolaou.
All women who are at risk of developing cervical cancer should get a Pap smear regularly. It’s the most accurate way of detecting this type of cancer in its early stages when it’s easiest to treat. Just how frequently women should have a Pap smear depends on their sexual activity, age, medical history and other factors. Women should check with their OB/GYN to see how often they ought to have the test done.
Pap smears are often done as part of a pelvic exam. To perform the test, an OB/GYN will open the vagina with a speculum. He’ll then reach the cervix with a plastic spatula and small brush, which he’ll use to collect a sample that can be sent to a lab for testing. The test doesn’t hurt, and it takes just a few minutes.
Pap smear samples are typically sent to a lab outside of a doctor’s office, so it can take a little while for the sample to be mailed, the testing to be completed, and the results to be mailed back. In most cases, patients will have the results to their tests somewhere from a few days to a few weeks. Patients who want to know precisely when they can expect results can ask their doctor how long the lab they use typically takes.
