A labiaplasty is an aesthetic procedure that enhances the appearance of the labia, which are the lips that surround the vagina. Surgery can be done on the labia major, which are the larger, outer lips, or the labia minor, which are the smaller, inner lips. Most of the time, the procedure is done to either make the labia smaller or correct an asymmetry of the lips. A labiaplasty may be performed as a single procedure, or it might be done as part of a more comprehensive vaginal rejuvenation.
Anyone woman who is concerned about the appearance of her vaginal lips might be a good candidate for a labiaplasty. Women who undergo the procedure to make the labia smaller are often middle-aged or older and want to address stretching of the lips that occurs over time. Women of any age, however, may have an asymmetry that they’d like corrected.
Although labiaplasties are a cosmetic surgical procedure, they’re usually done by OB/GYNs rather than plastic surgeons. OB/GYNs are specially trained to operate on this part of a woman’s body and most qualified to do the procedure.
Patients who are interested in a labiaplasty should seek out an OB/GYN, who is board-certified. Board certification is a basic mark of competence, and many doctors are board-certified in their respective fields. In addition to board certification, patients might want to seek out someone who is a fellow of the American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG). Fellowship with the AGOC is an additional mark of distinction in the field of obstetrics and gynecology. Finally, patients should find an OB/GYN, who has performed this procedure many times.
