Fibroids Treatment Q & A

by Behnam Kashanchi, MD

What Exactly Are Fibroids?

Fibroids, which are also called “uterine fibroids” or “fibromyomas,” are benign tumors that develop on the wall of the uterus. They’re quite common, most frequently occurring in women of childbearing years. They can grow to be large, and they can develop on any part of the uterine wall. Although they’re non-cancerous, fibroids can cause other health issues, depending on where they develop on the uterine wall and how big they become.

What Causes Fibroids?

The exact cause of fibroids isn’t known, but hormonal changes can make fibroids grow. Increases in progesterone and estrogen — two hormones that increase during pregnancy — can accelerate fibroids’ growth.

What Treatment Options Are Available for Fibroids?

The best course of treatment for fibroids depends on their size and location, and whether they’re causing any serious health issues. In many cases, OB/GYNs will recommend simply monitoring fibroids. The tumors may shrink, or even disappear, on their own. If treatment is necessary, doctors might first try using medications, such as gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists, or IUDs that release progestin.

When necessary, several more aggressive treatments are available for fibroids. Minimally invasive procedures include:

  • MRI-guided focused ultrasound surgery
  • laparoscopic myomectomy
  • myolysis
  • hysteroscopic myomectomy

In rare cases, more traditional surgeries are needed. An abdominal myomectomy or hysterectomy is rarely needed, though.

What Should Patients Who Have Fibroids Look for in a Doctor?

When selecting a doctor, women who live in Beverly Hills and have fibroids should first look for a physician who is licensed in California and board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology. Additionally, they may want to find a doctor who is a fellow of the American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Finally, patients should find someone who has a conveniently located office. If ongoing monitoring is recommended, going to a doctor who has a conveniently located practice will make it easy to get to and from appointments.
